In response to visitor interest, California native plants are woven into plantings throughout the gardens. California natives are particularly concentrated in the central part of the gardens on both sides of the Meadow. Native plants have been selected for their suitability for home gardens, drought tolerance, and value for wildlife habitat. Brilliant orange California poppies and deep blue ceanothus sparkle in the spring. As flowers become more sparse in the heat of the summer, native buckwheats and California fuchsias take over the show. Growing California native plants can provide vital nectar and food sources for California insects and birds. They provide gardeners with an opportunity to reconnect with California’s rich natural heritage. | Explore the Gardens |
